Teva or Nature Education

Our nature education or Teva offers so many engagement opportunities with Teva. Teva is a Hebrew word for “nature”. All of our programs are interactive and include art, music, food, and/or entertainment in many forms.

Teva Ed is Nature, Nature, Nature!

During Nature Education, or Teva, we learn all that the Torah and sages have to tell us about caring for the earth, explore water conservation themes while talking about Noah’s ark, growing our own food, sustainability, and other responsibilities we have, as Jews, to our world.

We can play a kosher animal matching game, go on an animal track scavenger hunt, or have a campfire reading night about animals in our PJs and slippers. There are so many ways to learn about Tzar Bahalei Chayim, Caring for the animals.

All of my programs are interactive and include art, music, food, and/or entertainment in many forms. You will NEVER see me standing in front of a room, teaching a one-sided lesson.

Nature Education Themes Include(but aren’t limited to):

“What’s Jewish on the Farm?” a program designed to discuss our commitment to caring for animals. Depending on the age, we discuss the creation of animals, how we are commanded to take care of them (with connections to having a pet and being responsible for them). We discuss why we are allowed to eat some animals and not others.

“To till and to tend” Spend some time in the garden or looking at interactive images of nature around the world and discussing our jobs as a steward of the earth and all that entails.

“Starting up an urban garden/container garden in your home or classroom” grows fast and furious and gives the most “instant gratification” What Jewish values can we pull from taking care of the land? Year-round vs. seasonal planting?

“Sukkot” guidelines, recipes, and activities to do around this exciting fall holiday.

“Recycling” what the Torah teaches us about being kind to the earth. Activities and learning about the 4 R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Re-purpose and how these are Jewish concepts.

“An Environmental Town Hall Debate” Your “town” has just had an acre of land donated, and all the town hall members have to decide what to do with the land? The only problem is that each member has a different goal for the land in mind. Using only text study, you have to create your argument for what to do with the earth. Great for middle schoolers through adults.

“Campfire Havdalah” Come in your PJs and be ready to enjoy the warm glow of Havdalah together. Bring your favorite library book to share with others—an excellent evening for elementary-aged kids and younger.

“Rosh Chodesh” what’s so important about the new moon? Create or participate in activities for welcoming the new moon and other celestial learning.
