Painting my house all began innocently enough last week when I noticed that the shelf I have anchored on the wall to the right as you walk through my front door was a little bit wobbly.
This shelf holds all the things, the keys, the mail, the leashes . . .all the things.
So today after I brought in my bags and placed them on the floor, I closed the door and went looking for my screwdriver to address said shelf. I came back to this cute little shelf and tightened up one of the screws, thinking I was all done.
Then I noticed that the screw was super loose and it made me think the anchor in the wall had come loose or possibly even fell through the drywall.
So naturally I have to unscrew all three screws and take the Shelf off to determine what exactly is going on. I start unscrewing everything and it’s very loose and I find that not one, but two of the wall anchors have pushed their way all the way through the wall and are now somewhere embedded between the drywall in my front entryway and the bathroom on the other side.
What’s left is 3 gaping holes. As the daughter and niece of two men who are extremely handy I went to find my little mini jar of spackle and a small sanding brick. However when I open my adorable little mini jar of supposed to be pink spackle this sucker is dried out and cracking. Chuck that in the garbage and it’s time to head to Lowe’s
And off to the home supply store I went . . .
In order to paint my house, I know that I’m going to have to go to Lowe’s, however I realize that I’ve never actually painted the walls in my house. I bought this house about 13 years ago and the color has always stayed the same. It’s some kind of a khaki/beige/taupe kind of color.
So I have no clue what color to get. What should I do? I call my friend Andrea Joseph. She is a realtor and I trust her with my life. I ask her what are the popular colors people are painting their houses these days?
She asked me a few questions like, “What kind of floors do I have? Do I have hardwood? Do I have a tile? Is my house a north-south facing house or an East-West facing house? Because that will determine the darkness of paint color and things like that.” So after those quick questions she shoots me a couple pictures and says go for one of these.
“Agreeable Gray” is one of them and it’s a nice light grayish almost with a tiny hint of blue kind of color. so I say “what the hell” and I go for it later that day I find myself at Home Depot picking up the Spackle kit more of that cute little pink pasty stuff that you put on the wall and you know it’s dry when the color has disappeared so I get everything ready to go I buy a gallon of agreeable paint and I’m ready to fix my wall.
Before I got started on the “paint my house” endeavor, I had to put on my “paint” shirt. This shirt is obviously the shirt used for ALL painting projects. As you can tell I’m not the cleanest painter. lol
Back to the wall at hand. The colors! Awesome everything goes on terrifically! The pink paste dries like it’s supposed to, I sand down all the extra grooves and get started painting. but when I finish that I realize that the wall across from it probably should be painted as well as the wall around the front door itself so naturally I do all three walls.
But I still have a lot of paint left and I start thinking about the fact that it’s probably been more than 13 years since the house has been painted And is probably due to get repainted.
You can’t even see the holes right? I did a GOOD job on them didn’t I?
I decided to channel my inner Kate and take on the challenge of painting the entire inside of my house. In April while we were stuck at home during covid-19, my friend Kate, from work, decided to paint every room in her house so I figured if she can do it, so can I. Thanks Kate.
So I started to paint the wall adjacent to the front entryway when going over the two double doors that lead into my art studio and turning down the hallway that leads to the bedrooms and the bathroom. At this point I ran out of paint and I need to get some more.
And off to the home supply store I went . . .again
The “painting my house” saga continues as I go back to Lowe’s for me, where I decided that I need to buy a 5-gallon jug of Agreeable Gray which by the way is made by Sherwin-Williams but lowes sells it. It’s the weekend, it’s not too busy because I went at a ridiculously early hour of the morning because I have covid insomnia like the rest of us.
I get my 5 gallons of agreeable gray and I’m on my way home. At this point thankfully my teenager has awakened from his 12 to 24 hour slumber and is offering to paint one of the walls for me. I give him a roller and a pan and tell him to go to town while I take a little bit of the agreeable gray for myself and start touching up some of the spots that I missed in the hallway and front entryway.
I move on to the guest bathroom. When I moved in it had new Cabinetry and looked pretty nice however it definitely needs to be painted. So as I started getting that room prepped I noticed that the towel rack that hangs on the wall next to the shower had literally been ripped from its wall studs (sound familiar).
Nobody bothered to tell me they just shoved it back into the hole and walked away. So with nothing to fear I grab my little pink spackle paste and fill in the hole I take the other end of the towel rack off and decide that it’s pretty old and pretty crappy looking and probably should be replaced.
Now if I’m going to replace the towel rack I need to replace the toilet paper holder as well as the shower curtain rod right? It’s the logical thing to do. It should all match. Then I’m looking around the bathroom and I noticed that the medicine cabinet is probably 45 years old including the medicine that’s inside it. LOL just kidding I never have medication that’s expired in my house. Wink wink. So of course I grab my screwdriver and remove the medicine cabinet.
My son and I take a break and I begin to walk around lovingly looking at my freshly painted walls and notice that the hallway walls and the front entryway walls now look like they are developing some form of a rash? The two grays don’t match! How is that Possible?
I checked the lid and made sure that the labels match and they do. so I’m pretty confused at this point as to what’s going on. I called Lowe’s and they told me to bring the five gallons back and take pictures of the walls and they would try to color match for me. Color match for me? Using a photograph on my phone? I don’t think so but we’re loading that 5 gallons back up and heading back to Lowes.
Painting the same Agreeable Color or Not?
My son and I get to Lowe’s lug the 5 gallons in and find my old friend Printis working at the paint counter. We explain to him what happened and show him the photographs and he agrees that the colors definitely don’t match. He does a little snooping and he finds out that there are two different codes for agreeable gray and it most likely the code that was used between the gallon of paint and the 5 gallons I bought earlier that day or not the same.
So he mixed me up a fresh batch of 5 gallons of agreeable gray and we compared the old 5 gallons from earlier that day with the new 5 gallons that he just mixed up for us. They are definitely different. The new set is clearly lighter than the old set. So we put the new 5-gallon bucket on the shopping cart and my friend mentions to me that the old 5 gallons is now going to be put on clearance for $30 oh hell yes put that back on the cart I will rebuy that can’t hurt to have the darker color laying around as well maybe I’ll paint a bedroom with it. But that puppy is coming home with me.
So I get home and I try out the new lighter color and guess what? It was a perfect match. So now I can go on my merry way continuing to paint the different parts of my house.
At some point in this entire process “Painting my house” project I’m talking on the phone with my parents and I’m telling them what I’m doing. I told her that I called my friend Andrea and asked her what color I should be using. My mom laughingly said I wonder if you’re using agreeable Gray. What the hell mom, how do you know what color I’m using? She said because that’s the color that we just painted our entire house six months ago. LOL go figure, leave it to me and my parents to subconsciously pick the same color.
Painting is still happening, still . . .
It has now been eight days since I initially somewhat accidentally tore the shelf off the wall by the front door and this entire fiasco started. I’ve had 4 trips to Lowes, 1 two inch paint brush, 1 mini roller and mini rolling pan, two rolls of blue tape and one pair of my favorite jean shorts and two T-shirts now ruined.
But I’m happy as a duck in a pond. I have managed to paint all the hallways, the front entryway, the kitchen, the two bathrooms, my dressing area and the walls leading into my bedroom. I also dug out the old brown paint that I painted two the walls in my dining room with and went ahead and repainted those two areas as well.
I’m not quite sure what’s gotten into me. Some people say it’s covid-19 all of us. Whatever the case is, I’m super happy with my new paint color (thank you Andrea Joseph) and I’m looking forward to finishing up these last two living areas by the end of the weekend.
I go back to work in person next week so I’m not sure I’m going to have time to get to the four bedrooms but I can promise you that on my next 3 Day weekend it’s definitely going to happen. Feel free to come by and help move some bookshelves or paint with me even! You can come by and see my Lettuce Grow tower, Hercules, while you’re at it!
So in closing the next time you see something that’s a little bit looser, a little bit wobbly. Just run away!. Don’t get all excited. I think you can fix it by yourself, you’re not Tim the Tool Man. Just step back. LOL. No it’s a good thing a fresh coat of paint is pretty cheap and it makes everything feel better. Now I need to find somebody to come over who can help me redesign and hang the ridiculous amount of pictures and paintings and artwork that I have in my house. lol
Before painting is slide #1 and after painting is slide #2
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
