Let’s get creative with some super amazing pumpkin decorating and carving techniques this year. I’m the Halloween QUEEN! I absolutely love this holiday. I love fall! I love the smells of fall like clove, cinnamon, pine, pumpkin, apple pie and many others!
I love the warmth of the winter season like cozy blankets, hot cocoa, fuzzy socks, warm flannel PJs, and lifetime movies. I have a panache for halloween. I love things that are creepy and crawly. I’m fascinated with the concepts of ghosts and haunted places. So wrap all this up in two months of holiday bliss for me and I’m in heaven.
Pumpkin decorating used to be a cute little kit your parents bought at the grocery store and you go to each carve one and put it on the porch. Maybe with a tea light inside it. Mom would bake the seeds while we carved and we would eat them all in one sitting before the pumpkins had time to settle on the porch (I love pumpkin seeds – just saying…)
It’s True! We’re starting with Squirrels!
First of all, I HAVE to show you this hands off pumpkin decorating activity. I cannot, I repeat, I CANNOT WAIT to do this in my backyard. I may buy a TON of pumpkins for this one.
Someone’s church pumpkin patch is about to get a serious financial boost from my shopping! LOL!!
All you need is some pumpkins, your carving tools and some peanut butter. And a bit of patience. Maybe a surveillance camera too. Cuz this is about to be epically entertaining.
Here is the link to some epic Squirrel pumpkin decorating fun! I HAVE to see your pics from this one and I promise to post some of my security camera footage on my socials soon too!
NO Pumpkins Were Harmed in Making These Decorations
Maybe you don’t like the ooy and gooey sensation of sticking your hands into a pumpkin’s innards and pulling out all the slimy pulp and seeds?
(Did I lose you with thai description? lol)
So what can you do instead of cutting into these orange fat gourds of goodness? Let’s check out a few ideas.
Painting your pumpkins. Pumpkin decorating with the paint version is one way to keep from cutting stuff up.
Your pumpkins don’t have to place the fear of G-d into people either.
They can be cute and fun too! You can try funny faces or Disney characters, like Olaf, Nemo and the Minions, maybe some cute little forest creatures too?
Check out a few of these cuties I found! Here is a link on making a Minion themed pumpkin. They are sooooo cute and I can see someone making a S#!t ton of these for their porch with maybe Gru hanging out somewhere closeby.
Other Ways to Make Your Pumpkin Decorating Stand Out
When decorating you can also pair two of my favorite things together! GLITTER and the movie Frozen! Spray paint has come a long way and you can find glitter spray paint that makes covering the pumpkin super easy to do! I love the Krylon Glitter Blast spray paint.
The blends are so pretty. Just make sure to clean the nozzle when you are done. They clog super easily.
But I digress. This is about FROZEN and glitter on a pumpkin. Check out this creative little lady’s Frozen pumpkins. I can’t even with these! Your little ones will LOVE creating Anna and Elsa styled pumpkins and when you add in this olaf pumpkin your pumpkin decorating game will certainly be elevated to stage 5!
Pumpkins as the Inspiration for Your Pumpkin Decorating
Of course you can use your pumpkins to CREATE the decor too! Check out how cute this image of the stacked pumpkins is! You can find a bag of small pumpkins and even gourds and glue them together like snowmen and get to decorating! This is so cute and totally unique!
You can also use multiple veggies to create cute creatures too. Try this octopus from a handful of veggies. Such a cute idea. And of course you can throw the entire squash in the garden to grow for next year.
This one is also totally adorable. Carve a baby pumpkin and then wedge it into the mouth of another pumpkin. Talk about double dipping! They are so cute and creative.
Paper pumpkins for the win!
You can also make your pumpkins from paper! You can make them like snowflakes, string them like garland or try other forms of creating with sheets of orange and black paper.
Carve Your Heart Out!
When it comes to carving pumpkins as your pumpkin decorating things have certainly come a long way since I was a kid. I think our carving tool was a stumpy orange piece of plastic with serrated edges. Yet. I still managed to cut myself with that if you can imagine. (more later on all my sharps precautions guidelines).
Today you can find an aisle of tools to make the perfect cuts. I love that now you can buy patterns to trace out and cut from. Stencils are always welcome but a bit harder to cut out while using so I tend to draw with the stencil and then cut out when I’m done.
As always, please be safe and use care when carving your pumpkins. Always use sharp well maintained knives and other tools.
Some people are also into peeling the pumpkin and carving intricate details into the flesh. This is beautiful and I hope to one day find the patience to do it myself. Lol
You can see why I just can’t get enough of Halloween and pumpkin decorating. I hope you’ve found some inspiration from some of these pieces and start thinking about your next fall adventure in decorating. Happy arting!
